FEA Report's Structure

What should a high-quality Finite Element Analysis report have?

A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) report should encompass several key components to effectively communicate the results and insights gained from the analysis:

1.  Introduction section: Providing background information on the problem statement, objectives of the analysis,    and a brief overview of the methodology employed.

2.  FEA model description: A clear and detailed description of the model and the assumptions, including:

  • The finite element model setup including the geometry and the simplyfing hypotheses
  • The mesh generation
  • The material properties
  • The external actions applied and the boundary conditions
  • Explanations of the simulation setup

3.  Results section: Next, the report should present the results obtained from the analysis in a structured manner,  including:

  • Graphical representations of key outputs such as stress and strain distributions, deformation plots, calculated forces and reactions, and any other relevant engineering parameters.
  • Numerical results should be accompanied by descriptive text that interprets the findings and discusses their implications in the context of the problem being analyzed.
  • It's important to highlight any areas of concern or interest identified during the analysis and provide recommendations for further investigation or design optimization if necessary.

4. Validation section: Additionally, the report should include a validation section where the accuracy and reliability of the finite element model are assessed. This may involve comparing FEA results with analytical solutions,        experimental data, or results from similar studies in the literature. A thorough discussion of the model's limitations and assumptions is crucial for ensuring transparency and credibility.

5.  Conclusions section: The report should conclude with a summary of the key findings, highlighting the main insights gained from the analysis and their relevance to the overall objectives. Recommendations for future work or areas of further study can also be included here.

Overall, a well-written FEA report should be concise, clear, and logically structured, enabling the reader to understand the analysis methodology, results, and conclusions effectively.
